2005 Lew Brown Memorial Award

Award winner Ms. Peggi Shapiro
with Rick Case (L) and Alan Jones (R).
Each year, the Washington State Healthcare Safety Council recognizes a single individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the field of health care safety. Those of us in healthcare safety work very unpredictable and long hours. It is important to take time and offer recognition to key people who truly make a difference.

The Lew Brown Memorial Award is presented each year in memory of Mr. Lew Brown, who was a loss control manager for a major insurance carrier and a member of the WSHSC for many years. Lew dedicated much of his career to the specialty of health care safety. He was always ready to go the extra mile to support health care safety issues.

This year’s winner of the Lew Brown Memorial Award is Ms. Peggi Shapiro from the Washington State Hospital Association. The WSHSC members certainly acknowledged Peggi’s leadership and coordination skills over these many years. Peggi rallied all hospital emergency managers pre-Y2K and from that point on a consortium of dedicated people have been gathering monthly to purse the tactics and policies to help healthcare remain viable during emergencies. Peggi has coordinated getting healthcare representation on key Homeland Security committees, thus ensuring our voice at the table, and our reciprocation of federal monies. Peggi works longs hours, attends numerous meetings, and always has the heart of healthcare in mind. She is our strongest advocate. We appreciate what Peggi has done for us and are very honored to be able to bestow this award to her.

Peggi will receive a plaque, $100 gift award, and is invited to become a member of the Board of the WSHSC.
